Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisurizer vs Ultra Facial Cream

The weather is getting colder (winter is coming!), and at this time of year my skin definitely needs a little bit more care and moisture.
As soon as I noticed my skin getting drier, I started to think about a few moisturizer options and a big sample of Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer that was sitting in my drawer came to mind. That didn’t make the cut though, so I headed back to Kiehl’s and I chose the Ultra Facial Cream instead: let’s see why!

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream Moisturizer

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer
This product is a fairly thick white lotion, and is really, really rich. That’s the problem for me: my skin is fairly normal with the odd oily or dry patch, and this just didn’t want to sink in. I was really surprised, as I expected a lotion to be more lightweight! It didn’t disturb my makeup or felt particularly uncomfortable, but something that doesn’t sink in even after 10 minutes in the morning is not really what I’m after. Now it sits in my makeup bag for emergencies, and it’s been handy as a night time moisturizer for a couple of unplanned nights at the boyfriend’s.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream
When you look at a line and see a moisturizer in a lotion and in a cream form, you immediately mark the cream as the heavier one. Well, in this case is the complete opposite! This cream feels so soft and luxurious on the skin but sinks in immediately, leaving the skin smooth and hydrated. It still contains a lot of lovely oils (Apricot, Almond, Avocado, and in addition to the ones in the moisturizer even Olive and Rice Bran Oil) and the skin like lipid Squalane that is often found in Kiehl’s products. I’ve been using this as a day moisturizer on really cold and dry skin days, or layering it over the top of my Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate (you can read more about it in my October Favourites) at night. I wake up with no dry patch in sight and my skin is definitely happier without feeling overloaded!

Have you tried any of these products? What do you like to use when the weather gets colder and your skin needs a bit more care?

  1. I use Kiehls products on and off. My boyfriend is currently using the Ultra Facial Moisturizer (regular and one with spf) and he says he loves them. :-) I go back to Kiehls when I want something gentle and reliable. :-)

  4. It's good to know that the Ultra Facial Mosituriser is heavier than you expected. I had thought about trying it but it doesn't sound like it would be suitable for my skin xx

  6. The moisturiser definitely sounds like something you want to be using at night as who has time to be waiting forever for a moisturiser to sink in. The cream sounds great and I've never tried anything from Kiehls before so might give it a go soon x

  8. I love Kiehls skincare (their Calendula toner is a fave of mine!) I'm yet to try this moisturiser although I do hear good things. I have combination skin I wonder how this will work for me, similar to you I do have more oily parts of my skin and drier parts. I tried the Stress minimising daily hydrator before and wasn't a fan would love to see how this one compares xx
